South Africa’s Garden Route: a 2 week itinerary

Enjoying a self drive holiday to explore South Africa’s garden route. I’ve included our itinerary and driving route below but other posts will provide more insight into each area.

Overnight flight to CapeTown

A) Days 1-3: Cape Town (African Elite Waterfront)

  • First look at Cape Town
  • Full day tour of Cape Town (Bo-Kaap, Robben Island, District Six, Castle of Good Hope, Signal Hill)
  • Hop on / off bus tour (blue route includes: Kirstenbosch Gardens, Constantia Wine region, Hout Bay and the stunning west coast drive)

B) Day 4-5: Stellenbosch (River Manor Boutique Hotel & Spa)

C) Day 6: Franschhoek (Franschhoek Boutique Hotel)

  • 30 minute drive to Franschhoek
  • Wine tram exploring local vineyards for food and wine

D) Day 7-8: Gansbaai (Grootbos Forest Lodge)

  • 2 hour drive to Grootbos taking the scenic road over Franschhoek pass towards Caledon and then turn left up past the vineyard called Creation to Hermanus before reaching Gasbaai
  • Explore the Grootbos Nature reserve, beautiful beaches and Klipgat cave
  • Shark Diving

E) Day 9: Oudtshoorn (Adley House)

  • A 4 hour drive which is absolutely stunning to Oudtshoorn
  • Visit the Safari Ostrich Farm / Cango Wildlife Ranch / Cango Caves / Meercats

F) Day 10: Knysna (St James of Knysna)

  • Walks / canoeing / seals / enjoy the bay

G) Day 11: Plettenberg Bay (Hog Hollow Country Lodge)

  • Forests / Tsitikamma National Park / Elephant sanctuary

H) Domestic flight back to Cape Town

I) Day 12-14: Cape Town (The Bay Hotel not shown on map)

  • Peninsular Cape tour
  • Helicopter to see the peninsular from above
  • Relax on the final day

Overnight flight back to London.
